Places of Interest
Ascot is home to arguably the most famous racecourse in the country. Royal Ascot is one of the highlights of the summer social season, taking place in June. This five-day festival of horse racing has pageantry and glamour in equal measure, with the arrival of the Queen and other members of the royal family in open-top carriages flanked by liveried footmen. Ladies’ Day in particular draws the crowds and is known more for being a fashion parade than for the racing itself.
Ascot is close to the world famous Wentworth, a large estate of detached houses built around three golf courses at nearby Virginia Water. Occupying 1,750 hilly, wooded acres, the Wentworth Estate is one of the country’s most coveted addresses. As well as Wentworth golf club, nearby there is also Ascot, Sunningdale and Foxhills, so golfers are not short of choice. There is also a lot of large open space with Windsor Great Park and Virginia Water both on the doorstep, making it a great area for dog walkers, cyclists, families and runners alike.
Ascot has a bustling high street with many independent shops, including a butchers. In terms of supermarkets, there is a Budgens and Tesco Express. A farmers’ market is held on the third Sunday in the month. Ascot also has a number of pubs, restaurants and independent cafés, including the popular Fego Caffe, part of a small local chain with another branch in Sunningdale. There is Waitrose supermarket close to Sunningdale station. Many residents do, however, choose to head to Windsor where there is a wider choice of shops, or for their weekly shop to head to the Tesco superstore in Bracknell which is just a 10 minute drive away.
The towns’ proximity to the ACS Egham international school and TASIS is a major draw for the overseas community. There are a wealth of excellent independent schools in the area for families to choose from and several state schools.
Ascot and Sunningdale are popular with west London families who get a lot more house and land for their money than in Fulham or Wandsworth. Ascot and Sunningdale are noted for their ultra-prime property, ranging from period country houses to bespoke modern mansions. But the areas also boast a fine choice of townhouses, Victorian cottages, terraces and modern apartments, accommodating a wide range of tastes.
